Q: What are you looking for in applications?
We will give every application a fair review, and there are many factors that go into our consideration of your work! Some basic points we look for:
- consistent art style ability to create finished pieces
- diversity in range grasp of realistic/stylistic choice in anatomy, lighting, colour, etc
- originality or unique qualities in art (piece, style, etc)
- clean line work and colouring
This is by no means an all-inclusive list, and I will not disqualify or approve an application directly based on the factors above it’s simply a guideline for your convenience!
I do strongly advise showing me the art style you’d be using for the piece, as a consistent style helps me envision what your work would look like in a zine!
Above all, I simply want to see your best work! You guys are amazing creators, be proud of yourselves and your art!
Q: Do I need an actual portfolio?
You do not! Simply link me samples of your work when you apply. :) It is optional to write in your handle for Tumblr/Twitter/others.
Q: What should I put in the extra comments section of the application?
Anything you’d like me to know! For example, whether your art is mainly traditional, if you need any special accommodations, if you have comments about your sample work, questions, etc.
Q: I don’t think I’m good enough to make it in the zine…
Please don’t worry about this! Everyone has to start somewhere and it never hurts to apply! Most likely, everyone who signs up will receive a spot. I believe in giving everyone a chance. Filling out an application is truly a formality so I can have all the information I need to plan the zine accordingly.
Q: If I apply and then change my mind about taking part, what should I do?
Contact me as soon as you can! Through out the process I will be checking in with you to see how you’re doing and I completely understand that life happens. If something comes up (whether physically or mentally) please let me know as soon as possible.
Q: What are the deadlines?
I don’t have an exact date at the moment but the final pieces will be due in December.
Q: Is traditional art accepted?
Yes! There were some very lovely traditional artists in our last zine that I was more than happy to work with. Just make sure to let me know in your application.
Q: I was in the Legion Zine, can I still apply to be apart of this one?
Of course you can, I’d love to work with you again. :)
Q: I think I made a mistake in my application! What should I do?
If you have saved the link of your application, you should be able to edit it post-submission. However, if you closed out of the link or you have remembered afterwards, contact me and I’ll fix it for you.
Q: Will participants profit from the zine?
For the first time, yes. However, it is a single payment instead of a percentage from the book. I will be paying you out of pocket and the money made from book sales will go to charity. You also get a copy of the book shipped to you.
Q: How much do participants get paid?
Participants will initially be paid $75 for their page. And then an additional $25 per page. (Max up to three pages.)
Q: When do participants get paid?
When I receive your deliverables! Meaning, when you submit your final works to me, I will pay you. This is to protect myself, I wouldn’t want to pay someone upfront and then have them drop out after.
Q: I don’t have a Paypal - can I still participate?
Unfortunately, you will need to have one. This is the only way I’ll be able to pay you securely and to keep track for my records. Even if you do not have a bank account, you will be able to make an account.
Q: What do we do with the money?
Whatever you’d like!
Q: What if I don’t want to get paid for participating?
I would prefer to pay you for your work to thank you for your time and efforts but! If you do not want or need to be paid, I can add it to the total donation number when its time to donate the final sum.
